The Landman Cometh

Have you had a knock on your door from the Landman?  One of those independent contractors who try to negotiate mineral rights leases on your property for the purpose of exploration for natural gas?

As there is more such activity in this area, owners of significant acreage are being approached.  In Caroline, there is a group of owners of about 800 acres who are banding together to obtain the best price for their leases.  You know the economic rules, supply and demand… if one neighbor accepts a low-ball pitch, they get the well, and, well, the low return, too.  Don’t sign a damn thing until you consult with a qualified lawyer, at the least.

And, this is surely one of those situations in which the fractiousness and lack of neighborly collaboration that this town is sometimes (alas!) famous for could really work against our individual and common interests.  Here’s hoping that the unprecedented takes place, and we actually work together– I have no special need to make a company in Denver rich off our divisiveness.
