Black Diamond Trail Work is ON!
Great news for the Black Diamond Trail. The work date for March 31 is on!
There was a great work day for the trail last autumn, clearing a part of the trail around Willow Creek Road and Agard Road, which is in an area just to the south of Taughannock Falls State Park. About 30 people were in attendance.
This month, another section of the trail will be widened and cleared of brush, starting at 8:30 AM on March 31 and going until about noontime. The following are directions from the site route 89:
- From Rte 89, turn away from the lake onto Agard Road. (Agard Rd intersects Rte 89 at #1571 Taughannock Blvd. )
- Travel on Agard Rd. about 0.6 miles.
- Turn right onto Willow Creek Rd.
- Travel 0.2 miles up Willow Creek Rd., and you’ll see where BD Trail intersects.
- Park along Willow Creek Road.
People under 18 years of age will need a note of permission from an adult or guardian.
If you have any questions at all, call Jan Zeserson at 256-7139. She’s coordinating the work day.
This is a chance for us all to be a part of history, clearing a walking trail that will be used by generations of people after we’re gone. A trail along which human-powered movement can take place safely all the way down to Ithaca is no small thing, given the risks that bicyclists take on the roads around here. The mere idea of a footpath that goes right through our town all the way from north to south, and eventually beyond in both directions, is exciting, and a great symbol for the attempt to imagine our community differently, in the light of the damage caused by the way we all (me too) have become dependent on our cars to get about.
Unless my wife goes into labor (five days until the due date) that morning, I’ll be there.

We were just down walking on the trail this evening, and I took some photos. You might go to the work day just to enjoy the views! These are, of course, further South than the workday area… Here are some urls to see them:

Here I will try to make them display– has not worked for me on this blog…
Black diamond trail is a good idea I think in spite of numerous local abjections. It would be nice to be able to walk or ride a bike to Ithavca at least without having to continually look out for auto traffic.
Hope it gets somewhat completed soon and at lkeast available to ride to Ithaca waterfront.
I meant objections not abjections.
How would I submit an original message instead of always commenting on Jonathan Kook’s messages?
There must be some avenue to do this.
