New Optical Scanner Voting In Trumansburg

Please get out and vote in today’s village elections in the back room at the Trumansburg village offices – and give yourself a few minutes more than you would ordinarily expect. Everyone, election workers included, is getting used to the new optical scanner voting technology that’s being used for the first time in Trumansburg today.

There is a problem with the process as I experienced it today: Privacy isn’t great at the end of the process. You go in and fill in the circles next to the names of the people you want to vote for. That part is done behind a privacy shield. Then, however, you’ve got to go take your ballot out of a concealing folder, and feed it into the scanning machine. That takes place just one or two feet from where people are walking in the door, standing in line, waiting for their turn. The election worker can get a good glance at the ballot too.

In order to be private, the scanning machine needs to be operated by a voter, or started by an election worker who then walks away. Whichever way it works, the machine needs to be behind a privacy screen of its own.

that’s nonsense. I took my ballot over in a folder, and fed it in FACE SIDE DOWN to the scanner. Only someone lying on the floor could have read it.

I had the same experience as Jon. And so did every one of the multiple people standing in line in front of me. A privacy screen would be a good idea, although I feel like I was able to keep my vote pretty private by shielding it while I carried it over and when I stuck it in the machine.

It doesn’t matter, everyone knows which candidate everyone is voting for. Here’s the code: obese/round, clad in walmart camo or poor angry and white = republican, young parent coming home from work with that sad glimmer of hope in the eyes = democrat.

Petrovic wins. 70% to 30%. Guess that proves that angry and white doesn’t work around here.

John White, what’s the opposite of ecstatic…wait don’t answer. How about GUTTED!! Wish I was there to see your face when they read 377 Petrovic 170 White. Thanks for playing and good luck paying off your campaign bills.

Bet we’ve seen the last Holiday Greeting from Mr. White plastered billboard size on Rt. 96.

    Boo Hoo.
