Trumansburg needs a self-concept that transcends the traditional separations of rural, urban and suburban communities. I’m not sure that language to refer to a village like Trumansburg yet exists. Finding Ulysses again, unless we can reintegrate where we live and where we work into who we are, the entire world becomes a suburb without a center. When it is 1:15 in the morning on January 5, and the temperature outside is 50 degrees, I am unnerved. I look at the radar maps, and see rain, not snow, and it’s coming from the southwest. I haven’t yet shoveled my driveway, and though I rarely look forward to that work, it doesn’t feel right to miss it. The stag was limping. Was it perhaps, a sign of the lagging virility of Trumansburg wild spaces? s supporting a law that the New York Times called a tyrannical law that will be ranked with the low points in American democracy, our generation’s version of the Alien and Sedition Acts a good idea for a Democrat who is trying to get elected? Is part of being a Democrat now to support an unprovoked war with a little torture on the side, when it’s the popular thing to do? Just as I’m willing to respect that newspapers, although often slow and shallow in the information they provide, are valuable for what they do, I think that journalists like Steve Ferrari ought to have the bigness of mind to recognize that blogs have filled a very important and useful niche in making information available to people – a niche that newspapers never have and never could fill. You can’t but a tree like that. You have to plant it and wait, and hope that others will be able to enjoy it even after you’re gone. No sidewalk, no matter how nicely made, is going to make up for its loss. The difference between us and the people of Alpena seems to be that we are still trying to harness our streets instead of giving them free rein. The value of long rhythms in a constant place receives less praise than it deserves. Trumansburg Democrats were all invited to a caucus, at which everyone interested could participate in the selection of the Democratic Party’s nominees. About 20 people came. I was one of them. A few people had a few concerns with Levine, Bouchard and Hrubos. But, no Democrat was willing to run against our mayor or the two Democratic villlage trustees up for re-election. |
