The Piggery is in the New York Times this week. I always had my suspicious about that paper.

The Piggery pigs are rooting around just outside of our village of Trumansburg, but when they meet the chopping block, they go on to much more distinguished plates. The foodies of New York City get those jowls and slabs, and this week, the Piggery CSA got mentioned in the New York Times Magazine.

Monique Truong writes,

On Sunday as the tail of Hurricane Irene was whipping through the trees and threatening to bring them and the power lines down, I started to think about my last meal, not my last one ever but possibly the last hot one for some time. The extra virgin olive oil wasn’t what I reached for. I went for the pork.

My husband and I belong to a pork CSA. Every other week, we receive fresh pork and ‘hand-crafted’ charcuterie from the Piggery, a farm in Trumansburg in the Finger Lakes region of New York. That week’s share included pig cheek medallions and pork confit.”

Trumansburg resident Emma Morris has just opened Fresh Organic Salon in Trumansburg, featuring relatively natural hair care.

Trumansburg resident Emma Morris is helping to show that, despite generally difficult economic conditions, Tburg’s Main Street remains vital. She has opened up a new business, the FRESH Organic Salon, at 61 East Main Street. A release notifying local media of the business opening explains, “Morris’ desire to create an atmosphere free of toxic chemicals and harsh smells brought to fruition the idea of an organic salon. Products include John Masters Organics hair products, featuring Organic Color Systems, ammonia-free color, with certified organic ingredients, easier on both clients’ bodies and the Earth.”

The Salon is open Mondays and Tuesdays 10 to 2, Thursdays and Fridays 2 to 6, and Saturdays by appointment, which can be made by calling 607-387-6882 or emailing emma@fresh-organic-hair.com. The web site for FRESH will be developed soon.

Trumansburg is a small village, but we’ve got our fingers stretched out to the world. For every mainstreet business we’ve got in Tburg, there are at least five online businesses based in our homes.

Given that we’re about to celebrate the most excellent holiday of Halloween (our Haunted Forest should be open at about 8:00 Halloween night), it seems like a good time to point to the witch-themed online businesses of our resident Rebecca Murphy. It’s called Witchcrafts, and offers a combination of witchy items and ephemera. She upcycles, she recycles. She’s also on Facebook, and on EBay with books.

In the empty space where the Artisan Cafe had been, soon Trumansburg will be Good To Go!

You’ve probably seen the circular orange logo in the storefront window, but what does it all mean? What is the Good in Good To Go?

They’re working on a web site, but for now, answers about Good To Go can be found on the budding business’s Facebook page. They write, “It is our mission to offer quality bulk, packaged, and prepared natural foods at affordable prices, while contributing to building a stronger, and more sustainable, local community.”

Natural food at a walkable distance on Main Street – that’s excellent news, but will it be yummy? They say they’ll be opening in October. We’ll see then.

Local food usually brings wholesome, nutritious, fibrous stuff to mind. I appreciate an organic carrot as much as the nice guy, and have admiration for the operation up at Sweet Land Farm. Still, there’s something especially appealing about the idea of a locally-made cake.

Here in Trumansburg, we’re lucky to have just such a resource in Emoticakes, which delivers within 20 miles of the village – good to know in case of baked goods emergencies.

My only disappointment: The Cake Of The Month club is only good for 8 months out of the year, and May is not one of them. Sigh.

Sweet Land Farm is offering a special deal this month. Come to the farm, just to the north of Trumansburg on Route 96, on March 13 between 1:00 and 3:00, and sign up for a share of vegetables grown on the farm for this year, and you’ll receive either a bag of fresh greens, just picked from the farm’s greenhouses, or a four-pound bag of root vegetables.

It’s a reassuring thought, that even now in the closing hours of winter, there are still good things to eat being taken from the ground nearby.

As an upscale business in bleak economic times, the odds were always against the Artisan Cafe. Now, the owners of the cafe are announcing their intention to sell the business, and to close its doors in the next two weeks. The following announcement was sent out a few hours ago:

“After much thought and continued hard work towards keeping The Artisan Cafe open we have come to the difficult decision to attempt a sale of the business. We will remain open for at least the next two weeks during which we will also accept inquiries into the purchase of the cafe. We deeply value all that each of you have done to show your appreciation for our presence in the community. It is with great sadness that we send this message to you, but we ask again that you pass it along to any interested parties. We still look forward to celebrating Valentines Day weekend with you as well as a very special music event next Saturday to benefit children’s cancer research. Again we thank you for your support through the last two years!”

The Artisan Cafe has sent out the following message to fans throughout Trumansburg and beyond, a message that combines an understanding of economic difficulty with a determination to persevere:

“Yes, we have reached a milestone of two years at The Artisan Cafe. It hasn’t been easy but we are trying to hang in there despite all the inherent problems of running a new business in a difficult economy. As a thank you to all our customers we will be open Thursday from 11am until 8pm in addition to Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We will also offer two dollars off every sandwich and entree all day Thursday, Friday, and Saturday! We hope to see you all during our Anniversary. For those of you who are having parties for the Super Bowl, remember we offer to go meals. We will have chili. burgers and our amazing cheesesteaks on the menu as well as our lunch menu to go all day Sunday. Just be sure to call in advance with orders. 387-4993. Thank you all for a great two years.”

In a time when some big restaurant chains have gone out of business, the Artisan Cafe remains, giving us opportunity for an occasional bite of comfort to help us get through the hard times.
