Did you hear about the opportunity to learn the Ukranian style of decorating eggs tomorrow in the Middle School art room? Who knew that The Cool Club is playing the Rongo on Saturday?

We’re an active community, but it’s difficult to keep track of everything that’s going on. So, it’s a relief to see that Tburg Events is online, compiling our village’s happenings in an easy-to-browse format.

If you’ve got an event of your own, you can add that too. So many things to do…

One of our neighbors has started our village off on an online experiment – a networking attempt using the Nextdoor web site’s structure. You’ll find it at Trumansburg Nextdoor.

Unlike other social networking systems online, this one requires a personal verification by regular old postal mail. They send a postcard to confirm your address, with information you need to enter. So, no snoopers from Enfield could crash this party.

So far, there are just three of us signed up. The way the system works is that, if there aren’t 10 more verified members in the next two weeks, Trumansburg Nextdoor will be shut down.

A network like this, used to spread news throughout our community, didn’t exist in our parents’ generation. Whether Trumansburg Nextdoor itself takes off or not, there will eventually be one or several such networks that do catch on, and that will change our lives significantly.

The technology is here, though, and I say that it’s better for us not to back away from it in fear. Is anyone else in?

Apparently, there's an activist video out in which Trumansburg teens declare that they have sex. I can't for the life of me find the video, though. Can someone provide a link?

Teens in Trumansburg have joined in with a national campaign to defend Planned Parenthood against proposed budget cuts from Republicans in the U.S. Congress. The campaign features teenagers making videos proclaiming “I have sex”. The idea is that a lot of teenagers have sex, and not because Planned Parenthood tells them to. As long as these teenagers are having sex, shouldn’t they have access to the related services, like birth control and sexual health exams, that Planned Parenthood provides?

In many web sites promoting the “I Have Sex” campaign, the following sentence appears: “Follow-up videos have now been produced at Bard College, Oberlin College, Elmira College, in Trumansburg, NY, and from American students studying in Equador and France, thanks to social networking, primarily on Facebook.”

Try as I might, though, I can’t find a follow-up video from Trumansburg teenagers who say they have sex. Does anyone know where this video might be?

The original video – not from Trumansburg – is below.

UPDATE: The video from Trumansburg is below – and only some of the Trumansburg teens in it acknowledge that they have sex, though all declare their support for Planned Parenthood.

Trumansburg is a small village, but we’ve got our fingers stretched out to the world. For every mainstreet business we’ve got in Tburg, there are at least five online businesses based in our homes.

Given that we’re about to celebrate the most excellent holiday of Halloween (our Haunted Forest should be open at about 8:00 Halloween night), it seems like a good time to point to the witch-themed online businesses of our resident Rebecca Murphy. It’s called Witchcrafts, and offers a combination of witchy items and ephemera. She upcycles, she recycles. She’s also on Facebook, and on EBay with books.

Warren Real Estate, hungry for sales in a depressed real estate market where hints at recovery have yet to become solid, has begun posting video profiles of the homes it has for sale on YouTube. The first I’ve seen of these for Trumansburg is for a “Cape Cod” home down on the other end of Cayuga Street.

As someone who tried, and failed, to sell his home last year, I offer my sincere best wishes to anyone who is trying to sell a house these days. Those wishes come with a big dose of skepticism, however.

It will take more than a video gimmick to sell a house in current economic conditions. The following YouTube video has been online for four days, and in all that time, it’s had only one visitor – and that visitor was me.

I’ll say this in favor of the house on Cayuga Street: Trumansburg is a great place to live, and the people on Cayuga Street are great neighbors. Buying that house, you’ll be getting a heck of a lot more than the “simple country pleasures” promised in the video. Perhaps if the video connected the house to the considerable strengths of Trumansburg’s community, it might be more successful.

The farmers market that comes out on top of the Local Harvest contest gets $5,000 in funding - and that would go a long way toward keeping the Trumansburg Farmers Market going for years to come.

There’s a great opportunity for the Trumansburg Farmers Market online this week: Local Harvest is allowing people from across the United States to vote for their favorite farmers market. The farmers market that comes out on top gets $5,000 in funding – and that would go a long way toward keeping the Trumansburg Farmers Market going for years to come.

Please go and vote for our Farmers market. We may not have a population as large as Ithaca or other nearby cities, but we’ve got a big number of dedicated people here in Tburg. So far, the Trumansburg Farmers Market has eight votes. I know that the market has many more supporters than that.

Here’s what I wrote along with my vote:

“Here in Trumansburg, we’ve lost the supermarket in our downtown village area, and so, without the Trumansburg Farmer’s Market, we wouldn’t have a walkable source of fruits and vegetables. Once a week, people from Trumansburg wander on down to the park, and they do more than just shop. They meet and talk with each other in a common space where their kids can play and enjoy live music. The Trumansburg Farmers Market doesn’t just give Trumansburg a source of healthy food. It also gives us a tool for building a healthy community.”

Peter McCracken wrote:

“The Tburg market is simply the best. Great food from Simply Red, live music from local artists, all kinds of different foodstuffs — honey, goat, cinnamon buns, fruits and veggies — plus crafts, neighbors, and all kinds of other wonderfulness. I love it. My son always sees friends he knows (as do I, for that matter), and it’s just a great environment. It’s a great place to see new businesses forming, and watch others grow. And this year there’s both wine and ice cream! Can’t beat that.”

Margaret Shepard wrote:

“The market is small enough to have a true community feel, but big on diversity and quality of farm produce, baked goods, crafts, diner vendors, and musicians. I began selling produce at the Trumansburg Market two years ago and feel at home: the vendors are cooperative rather than competitive, and there’s always a lively two-way exchange of information with customers, many of them serious gardeners. Quite a few kids know good food: they recognize habaneros and serranos, Araucana and Welsumer eggs. How encouraging for the future of local foods!”

Please, add your thoughts.

Grassroots videos are starting to trickle onto YouTube. The most reflective, in one sense or another, of the bunch, is the one you see below:

My favorite Grassroots conversation from this year:

“Hey, man, I’m a friendly guy. I can get you really high.”

“We’re going to have to handcuff you.”

“No, it’s okay. I’m a cool cat.”

In the weeks to come, we can expect to see many videos of the Grassroots Festival uploaded to YouTube. What with being able to hear the music from miles away and then watching the concert videos online, I almost feel like I was there… almost.

Until Monday, Grassrootsters will remain offline, unable to upload. So, for now, the only video footage of Grassroots we have is from the outside, of an ambulance rushing in – an aspect of Grassroots that isn’t so groovy.
