Yes, it's real, and yes, as you say, it's actually a gliding squirrel. It does not flap its arms and fly, as would a bird or bat.

Why not just do an email/listserv thing? It's probably easier and more direct in the long run. If I have to have another user account that I have to log into (not to mention another login & password to remember) I'm going to explode... or more realistically, I simply won't bother to use the account.

What about organizing a weekly discussion group at Gimme or Good To Go? Meet your neighbors face-to-face and support local business at the same time!

"The technology is here, though, and I say that it’s better for us not to back away from it in fear."

Fear has nothing to do with it (although for some, maybe it does.) Just because something can be done on a computer doesn't mean it is better if it is. For a place like Trumansburg, I don't think this website has any advantage over simply getting to know your neighbors personally.

An elm. I never would have guessed that... and apparently, it really was a unique tree. Was the disease Dutch Elm, I wonder? If that's the case, it seems unlikely that a replacement would survive for long. A shame.

Thanks for the information, Bill.

The tree was a Camperdown elm. All specimens are derived from a single sport found in a Scottish arboretum in the 19th century. They are grafted onto root stock, usually several feet above the ground. In the case of the Trumansburg "umbrella tree" the graft was infiltrated by disease, which killed the tree in 2009.

I wrote a story on its demise in the Trumansburg Free Press.

Another flying squirrel was brought in just last week. Either they're getting more clumsy, or they're quite common.
